The Northeast Corridor is now served by Amtrak’s new, faster Acela trains, marking the first deployment of new high-speed trains in the region since 2000. These next-generation Acelas can reach speeds of 160 mph, surpassing the 150 mph capability of the older Acela models, according to Amtrak.
The introduction of these trains promises a more reliable service and potentially lower prices for passengers, while also aiming to enhance Amtrak’s profitability.
Beyond speed, the new Acela trains offer a range of enhanced amenities designed to improve the passenger experience. These include complimentary 5G WiFi, upgraded food and beverage options, individual power outlets and reading lights, increased legroom, and winged headrests for added privacy.
Currently, five of these next-generation trains are in service, with plans to expand the fleet to a total of 28 new Acela trains by 2027. Passengers can identify these trains on the Amtrak website and app by looking for a specific tag, or by checking the train numbers.
Amtrak has provided a preliminary schedule for the new trains. Trains 2153, 2154, 2170, and 2173 are scheduled to operate on weekdays. On Saturdays, trains 2250 and 2251 are running. Sundays see trains 2248, 2258, 2259, and 2271 in service. However, it’s important to note that these train numbers are subject to change.
